Exemplary poets and calligraphers of the late Heian period (794-1185), including the poet-priests Jakuren (1139-1202) and Saigyo (1118-90), each composed a poem on one of the twenty-eight chapters of the Lotus Sutra. The identification of official rank for each poet suggests that the poems were composed from Jisho 4 (1180) to Juei 2 (1183). This set is important as a collection of calligraphic writings by famous poets. Saigyo’s poem was removed and is today mounted as a hanging scroll. A painting of a maple tree in autumn by Tosa Mitsuoki (1617-91) that was originally thought to be painted on the back of the cover was later added. The formatting of this set of poems into an album dates to around this time.
