“Kameyama-giri” are the fragments of the copy of the first, second and fourth volumes of Kokin Wakashu, which were copied in the mid-Heian period. These fragments are possessed by different organizations and the ones that the Kyushu National Museum possesses comprise 17 pieces of paper and 39 poems and constitute the largest part of the fragments. They have the following two unique characteristics, which are notable from a research point of view: There is an inside title of “Kokin Wakashu Volume 2” and they contain poems that are not included in a popular edition (Teika edition). While the current binding is in the form of retsujoso, where each page is pasted on a mat board, the original seems to have been in a dual-page book form. The writing paper is sprinkled with fine mica and has light indigo blue fibers, either on the upper or lower parts of certain pages. This type of writing paper with light indigo blue fibers is called “cloud paper”. The paper used for these fragments is particularly soft and transparent. It inspires an image of clouds floating in the sky and has a pure, elegant atmosphere. On such elegant paper, poems are written in a delicately elegant and flowing manner. Since ancient times, this writing has been deemed to be one of the best old handwritings of the Heian period. As the name shows, it was handed down to the Matsudaira family, the feudal lord of Kameyama Domain in Tanba by the Edo period and later possessed by Takashi Masuda (pseudonym as a tea master: Donno; 1848 – 1938), a businessman and master of the tea ceremony, as well as other owners.
